Kappa engine variator

Hi,
I was worried about the diesel-like sound coming out of my engine and it looks like it's the engine variator (part number: 7777221). Anybody else had a similar problem? Any risk or long-term impact of running the car this way? Any idea about the cost of the part? Thanks.

Adrian, I notice you are getting 0,0 response. I for myself am not clear on what exactly you mean. And I have no parts catalog at hand to check, so can you explain? Maybe you will then get a response.

Sorry, I haven't checked the forum for a long time. I was just saying that I have some diesel-like noise (the typical tac-tac-tac) out of my benzine engine and some people with better knowledge told me it's the variator (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variator). My question was if there are any long-term effects of using a worn variator or it's just the annoying noise.

Sounds as if you refer to the advance mechanism on the inlet camshaft. If I were you, I would get it fixed, it is a system based on the oil pressure, and it has influence on your engine performance.
For a start, the valve timing will be off track all the time, and the tack tack sound is probably the camshaft "jump" advancing and retarding under the influence of the valve springs. Long term this could well break a valve stem, as the movement is erratic. Dont drive too long with this defect is my advice.

The guy here:
http://www.alfa156.net/fr_index.html?/news.html says there's no long-term impact. I think the audio files are the same as on the .hu website.
Today, my Lancia simply refused to exceed the 160 km/h mark, no matter how hard I pressed the pedal. I have to admit I was running on LPG, not benzine.
What really annoys me is that I had the belts changed about two months ago and the variator could have been done easily then! Now it means they have to take apart the whole timing mechanism ==> extra hours of labor ==> extra money.
