R&R Axle Connecting Sleeves

One of the last steps in the procedure to remove the transaxle is to ‘slip’ off the axle connecting sleeves. The bolts are removed from the sleeves but I cannot get the sleeves to move along the splines off the yoke and onto the axle.
Is there a trick or tool for this?
A slide hammer pulling against a bolt threaded into the sleeve - but not through to the axle - doesn’t not work. The inner side of the sleeve rests too close to the inner hub rubber seal to apply heat.
The way I have it position on jack stands the outer hub is slightly lower than the inner hub. Do they need to be equal height?
The sleeve and the splines have been drenched with Kroil, my go to penetrating oil.
How are these sleeves removed?
