Aprilia cylinder head/cam cover exlotion

Ciao everyone,
I own a 1947 Aprilia & while out on a run I had an almighty explosion from within the engine bay which resulted in a cloud of blue smoked,On closer inspection the explosion blew off the oil filler cap which luckily I found.
Is this a Aprilia fouble?
Has anyone else experienced this?
What is the remedy?
