Cooling fan(engine)+ unknown wire.

. My cooling fan won't start, even when it passes 100 dg celsius. Is there a relay somewhere? or where is the sensor?
And now i just found a single "unknown" wire. it 's red/grey. It's located beside the wires for temp. sensor and there is power on 2-5 volt. anyone knows where it should be plugged? It's a thema 16v turbo

"That Thema is killing me. always electrical failure"..... :-(

Hi peter,

There should be a relay for the fan, I think in series 2 & 3 it is in the small relay-box under the bonnet (battery side).

This is an easy test: short-circuit the coolant-switch, the relay has to click and the fan should work.
If so: check out the switch.
Otherwise look for the relay, bypass it, and if the fan doesn't work then, check out the fan.

Also check out wiring, fuses, connectors... but you allready know that 'cause you're a Thema owner :)

If it can help you, I believe i have a wiring-diagram.

regards

Pol

Hello,
Just a small point - on the S3 Thema, the radiator fan relay is wired so that it functions at all times. The fan on S2 cars only operates when the ignition is on.

tried to connect the fan direct to the battery...The fan is ok.
Then i tried to short-circut the coolant switch (the one located in the bottom of the cooler). Then it just buzzes somewhere down there???? no clicking from any relay... any ideas?

Leo, are you sure about that? On my '94 turbo it's disconnected by the contact key.
But I realise it's not better that way.

Peter, I will send the diagrams if you still need them, is it a S3 or S2 , it makes a difference.

Hi Pol,
Yes definitely my S3 LS Turbo fan runs on without the ignition. I wired up a manual switch on mine with a connection to earth the relay and then did the same with my friends S2 car and his went off with the key. Do you think mine has been re-wired? There is no obvious sign of that.
(I am good with car electrics!)

Leo,

I went to my garage immediatly, unplugged the thermo-switch and put a piece of wire in the connector.
The fan didn't work at that point, then I turned the key on, and the fan started to blow.
It should be like that according to the wiring diagram.
Maybe it's different because of the year it's built, mine is a late 1994 LS Turbo.
