Phase 3 engine problem.

I currently own a 1993 Thema 16V VIS with 140000 miles on the clock. When the car is driven at over 4000rpm it is subject to an intermittent stall or hiccup, below 4000rpm there is no problem.
Initially I thought the issue was in the full system. I have replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, pressure regulator and checked all the pipes and clips which has made no improvement. I have also disconnected the solenoid valve for the VIS which has also made no difference. I am starting to think it may be a sensor or electrical issue.
Any help, advise or similar problems successfully solved would be gratefully appreciated.
