I have a complete engine from Tipo 2.0 16v (the flywheel exploded, destroying block, gearbox...). I found an engine from wrecked '88 Thema turbo 8v. I want to put my 16v head on Thema turbo short block - and I am interested if someone has tried this before.
I have some details on 16v head retrofit on older 8v blocks, but it only concerns N/A applications...
What turbocharger is fitted on Thema turbo 8v? What power/torque output can I expect, by just swapping factory components? What is the compression chamber volume on Thema turbo?
As for injection system... Does the Bosch injection implemented in Thema works fine (even when it gets this old)? I am very familiar with Weber/Marelli IAW (I have mapping/diagnostic software and apropriate hardware), but if Bosch system works fine, I'd stick to it for now (since it will require very little attention in order to work on turbo).

Cao Nikola,

Re: Tipo 16v head on Thema turbo 8v engine...
Hello Nikola,
I am sure that the 16V head will fit the 8V block. A guy in Australia put a Thema 16V head on a Beta block. There may be difference in the oil feed - check the Lancia Beta web site - http://www28.brinkster.com/lanciabeta/ for further information. The Bosch fuel injection is as good if not better than the Weber-Marelli. The later Themas had Bosch Motronic that has similar synchronised injection to the W-M and is a full engine management package. I don't know for sure but I suspect that the Tipo used Bosch Injection and W-M Ignition control.
Where did you get the W-M diagnostic software?

Re: Tipo 16v head on Thema turbo 8v engine...
Hello Antoine,
The address for the 16V head man is fiat@turbo124.com he put the 16V head on a Fiat 124 spider.
The Australian Site has a link to the experts own site http://www.turbo124.com and there is a lot of info on http://www.turbo124.com/howto.htm
Dave has modified the engine further so some bits like using thicker head bolts will not be neccessary. The 16V engines use the "multi v" alternator belt so you need to change the crank pulley, but you will need to do that anyway as there is a different number of pegs to trigger the top-dead-centre sensor.
I put a complete 8V engine into a 16V bodyshell so have experience of some of the differences outside the block and head.

Re: Tipo 16v head on Thema turbo 8v engine...
hi ,leo
thank ,you very much for your information , I am interessing for this project because it is one good solution for to use unleaded petrol in my beta monte carlo , the probleme is in this head the inversion
of the exhaust and admission systeme , I need to make on new exhaust line and the same thing for the
petrol line
thank again
regards
ps : you are Italian ?

Re: Tipo 16v head on Thema turbo 8v engine...
Hello again.
I have just recently bought a Montecarlo - I noticed an "Antoine in France" mentioned on one web site and wondered if that was you - now I know.
I had been thinking that a Dedra 2000cc head on the "Beta" block might be a good replacement for unleaded conversion. The exhaust is the difficult bit, I think there will be enough space for the inlet manifold and bits although the spare wheel may have to move to the front. The 16V inlet manifold is much bigger but again probably enough space. However the turbo unit will add to the problems of space between the engine and the bulkhead.
Good luck, keep me informed with progress, Leo

Nikola,
Do you have a wiring diagram for the Tipo16V engine?
I have been looking for about 3 years for one.
I have a Tipo 16v engine, new wiring harness and no idea how to get them together!
