timing belt change, 8V turbo

I recently bought a Thema Turbo 1986. The belts where changed about 50.000 km ago, and the car has 212.000 on the meter. I can see from earlier posts that the 16V engines need frequent balanceschaft- and timing-belt replacement. How often should the belts on the 8V turbo be replaced?

60k is the absolute maximum, but it also depends on how long ago this was.
If I were you, I'd change the belts.

Hi,

had a 8V Turbo several years ago. Overall it made 300.000 km. Changed the belts (both) every 60.000 kms, had no problems.

Here (in New Zealand) the local agents recommend changing the cam belt every 60,000km and the balance shaft belt every 120,000km (ie every 2nd change).
I have 2 8v turbos, 1 with 220,000km and the other (which has just died - big end bearings) has 380,000kms.
The motor should not suffer any damage if the balance shaft belt breaks, any damage that occurs is usually because the broken balance shaft belt get caught up in the cam belt. Saying that I've had the balance shaft belt break but luckily just as the motor started, so it did not get tangled up and cause damage.

Thanks for the info. I tried to change the belts yesterday, but came uppon some problems.. Getting of the balanceshaft-belt was easy, but removing the 22mm bolt that holds the belt-wheel (or whatever it is called in English) - that has to be removed to get to the cam belt - was impossible to loosen. Standing on the brakes and pulling on the bolt with a long pipe-tool had no effect. Does anybody know if I need a special-tool to get it loose, or should I try with a strong compressor-driven wrench?

I also tried to change the bearings that are in contact with the belts, including one sitting on one of the ballanceshafts. How do I hold the shaft still while taking of the nut?

Thank you for any help

Hi,

I think I know what your problem is.

To immobilise the pulley (I think that's what it's called), you can use the holes around the bolt (4 I believe).
I used a tool for that, but I have no idea how it's called, basically it's a lever with two pins, wich's distance you can adjust, these pins fit in 2 of the holes and while holding the lever, you can keep the pulley immobilised.

Another possible method is to screw a long threaded bolt in one of the holes until it reaches the engines housing, but this is a dangerous method because when you take to much force on it (or you pull to hard on the 22 bolt), you could break the housing.

3th possibility is a tool to block the fly-wheel, but I never used that one myself.

Come to think of it, I'm quite shure the 22 bolt is left-gauged, so you'll have to turn clockwise to release it.

For the bearing, if the shaft doesn't want to stay in it's place, you just remove the nut+shaft together and separate them afterwards on the workbench, then yo screw the shaft back in it's place and you can put on the new tension-wheel.

I hope you understand what I mean, because I don't know all the correct english terms. My experience in this matter is only with 16V engines, but it should make no difference for this.

Good luck!

Pol

Reading your message again, I think you are talking about another bearing, the one behind the dented wheel of the front balance shaft, where you have to remove that wheel wich is secured with a bolt in the middle.
You can hold the wheel while releasing the bolt, don't worry about turning the balance shaft, just make shure to put it back in position when putting the new balance shaft belt. There should be marks on it or you have to mark it first yourself.
Turning the ballace shaft around won't damage anything.

You know that the part is left hand threaded?

I didn't know that it was left hand threaded, so problem should be solved. Will try again on thirsday..

Thanks, Øystein
