Thema 2000 16v Cold Start Problems

Unread post by Dave Parkin »

I have just acquired a 1990 Thema 2000 16v. Which is in good general condition. The problem I have is starting the car from cold. It runs well once warmed up. I have fitted new plugs, the battery is in good order, I feel that the problem is inadequate fuel delivery can anyone suggest the best way to tackle the problem.

I had the same problem with mine, turned out to be the fuel pump relay. Big blue one on the fuse tray under the bonnet (near the battery, has loads of pins, some small), changed that for a new Bosch item and it was fine. If you find it will start cold and hot but not warm ,ie. having stood for a few hours after use, change the coolant temp sensor, blue plug on the back of the stat housing, follow the top hose from the radiator to the stat then look round the back.

Simon,

Wondering what symptoms were associated with the fuel pump relay fault.

I've tried two different temp sensors (both secondhand) and this improved the running when starting from cold, but the car still requires about 4-5 secs of cranking to get it to fire when it is being started under any conditions other than completely cold or recently turned off and still hot.

Even after being inert for 8 hours, the engine requires 4-5 seconds of cranking before it fires. The Aux air valve is good.

Another symptom is a tendency to "Kangaroo" when being driven at around 1500rpm or less with the throttle closed or only partially open. It feels like fuel starvation, but maybe the injectors are at fault. Otherwise the car is a very smooth trouble free drive.
