Wiring a manual switch for the Radiator Fan

I'm planning on giving myself the security of a manual over-ride switch for the radiator fan.
I'm not an experienced car electrician some my thoughts were to either
1) wire the switch in so that it was in the circuit in parallel with the thermostatic switch.
2) to wire the switch in across the radiator fan relay so that it gives the relay switch an alternative earth when the over ride switch was turned on.
Obviously I want to keep the functioning of the Thermo Switch intact. Is either circuit preferable or is it just a question of ease and preference?
