New dedra turbo owner

Hello chaps, I've just bought a Lancia dedra turbo 1991, seems a lovely car FSH and a lot of recent engine work, new clutch and slave , 96k miles. No tax or mot (small hole in floor). Seems a real good car. Bought it for £250. Apparently the owner couldn't shift it for months !

A couple of points I noticed, why is the dedra turbo 165bhp when the similar engined delta produces 180bhp ?

Is this really all dedra's are worth ? Anyone know why this model seems to be the orphan in the Lancia family ? I owned a 2.0 ie se some years ago and although it had its faults ( slightly wooden steering feel mainly ) it has a lovely smooth engine (twin balancer shafts probably), lovely gear change and seemed to be a perfect size compromise.

Any thoughts ?

Hi and welcome!

I've had three Dedra Turbos and know a fair bit about them now. £250 - £300 is about right for one with no MOT, up to £1000 for one in average-good condition with MOT.

I bought my first one for £800, lovely metallic black paintwork with a really good interior. Used all those 165 horses for 18 months and then sold it for £1000 needing a cambelt change and 4 new tyres.

Bought another, red one for £295 off ebay with some tax and the MOT about to expire. I still haven't got round to replacing the front shocks and two ABS sensors and it's still sitting in my ex's garage...

Bought another black one out of Autotrader for £300 with an MOT fail sheet showing it only needed a small exhaust blow and the rear calipers fixing. Took it to my MOT place and it failed on loads of stuff including rusted sills, suspension bushes... also got very smoky on the drive home and failed the emissions test. Got some of the work done and then moved job, house, even county. Never got round to paying the garage bill so let it go to an interested party if he paid the bill (only came to £99) but he kindly gave me £50 as a goodwill gesture. Oh well you win some, you lose some.

Anyway I think they're fantastic cars, very underrated with great long distance ability, comfort and performance. Fuel economy hurt me in the pocket (averaged 270 miles on a £50 tank) and the best I managed driving like a nun was 333 miles on a £50 tank, about 24mpg. Every journey was an event though and I miss the dedra.

I might one day get the red one back and on the road but will probably just get it through an MOT and sell it on so some lucky person. I ran my last Dedra as a student - now I've hit the world of work, I'm finding I am a lot worse off financially and could probably do without 24mpg economy, high insurance and maintenance etc as I am attempting to save up to travel the world.

Enjoy your dedra turbo, I know you will!
