Dedra 1.6ie ECU

Hi,
Yesterday I changed the battery on my Dedra 1.6ie. Now it's REAL fun to drive! Basically the "return to idle" is all screwed up - it's really hard to pull away without stalling. If returning to idle from high revs it just stalls! The car is fine when driving.
The handbook has a special section about removing the battery on the 1.6ie and tells you the procedure to carry out in order to perform the ECI "self learning":-
1. Run the car until the fan cuts in and out twice.
2. Disconnect the +ve lead from the battery for about 30 seconds.
3. Run the engine between 2000 - 3000 rpm until the fan has cut in & out twice, then let the engine idle for about 2 minutes.
Well I have done this but it has made no difference.
Any tips?
