fitting a 2litre turbo in a delta gt i.e.

Hi,I'm an owner of a delta gt i.e. I'd like to put a 2 litre turbo from a dedra/thema. Wich engine suits better, dedra or thema? What problems could i have?

Hello,
There is not enough space for the exhaust manifolds. You would need to use the Delta (HF Turbo or integrale) exhaust. The Thema/Dedra plenum chamber inlet/throttle body is not ideal either. If thinking about a Thema 16V Turbo (or even the non Turbo) engine - then forget it!
The other big problems are:
Water pump outlet/Engine mount bracket. You will need to use the integrale style mount as the balancer shaft is where the support bracket is for the GTie.
The transverse drive shaft (at rear of block) is too long for the Delta and the bracket will not accomodate the GTie one. I'm not sure about the Prisma integrale arrangement - it may be possible to use the bracket from that setup (if you can find one). As the integrale has the visco-drive unit there is no 2wd installation that has a suitable bracket. I have made up an arrangement so as to use the Dedra bracket but move the shaft bearing inwards by about 20mm.

I would not reccomend this unless you are very competent in mechanical work. My project is to put the 2 litre non Turbo motor from a Dedra into my GTie - almost there after over a year!

An easier way to go would be to use a 2L block from a Beta and put the newer head on it - that simplifies the support and drive shaft situation! But even so its a challenge.

Could I try with an integrale engine (maybe 8V)? What problems could I have then?

The integrale installation would be much easier (in some respects). The gear linkage is different so if you use the integrale gear box that would need changed - I would not reccomend using the standard 2 wheel drive gearbox - it can hardly stand the power from the HF Turbo engine. If you use the integrale gear box there would be the challenge of what to do with the drive to the rear.

I think that basically the engine installation would be easy but the transmission would be difficult.
I reckon that the sensible thing to do would be to buy an integrale.

That's an easy installation as the 8Valve Croma engines do not have balancer shafts. It is easy to put a non-balancer block into a Delta and has been done many times, most famously by Peter Gerrish and Barry Waterhouse (using Beta blocks) many years ago. The balancer shaft engines (as in Dedra, Thema and Delta integrale) are more desirable as they rev more freely, much like the short stroke 1600 engines do.
