Whats the ultimate delta
Re: Whats the ultimate delta
The Delta was first released as a 1.5. There was then a 1.3. Both of these cars using the Fiat single cam engine.
Lancia then produced some higher performance Delta, the GT, GTie, HF Turbo and HT Turbo ie. These four cars all ran 1600 Fiat twin cams. The GT put out 105Bhp from a carbed engine, the GTie 109Bhp from the same engine but with added fuel injection. The HF Turbo and HF Turbo ie used the same 1600 twin cam buth with an added Turbo charger. These cars put out about 135 Bhp.
In both instances the ie models replaced the carb models.
What many see as the ultimate Delta was the S4, released in 1985. This was a Group B/Group S rally car with only 200 road going examples ever produced. These cars featured both a Turbo and a Supercharger. They also made use a Four Wheel Drive and were arguably the fastest Delta ever produced.
When Group B was banned Lancia developed a Group A car. The first road going examples of this were the HF 4x4 which was a 2.0 8v Turbocharged 4x4 Delta. This did not feature the flared wheel arches of the Integrally.
The Integrally replaced the HF 4x4 as the "Top" Delta. This car introduced the flared wheel arch look which was evident on all fast Deltas since. The HF Integrally was first fitted with an 8 valve engine which was later replaced by the 16v Integrally. You may also come across a KAT model of each car - basically the same but with a catalytic converter. The Evolutionise I and II (EVO) were factory tuned Integrallys with even more power.
Somewhere like www.carsfromitaly.com or www.walkersgarage.co.uk has much more information on the development and evolution on the Delta over the years.
