electrical gremlin?
Re: electrical gremlin?
Hi Huib,
I'll put in 8's for fuses 1-6 and 16's for the rest. I'll monitor their condition very closely over the next few days assuming that it's still ok. Its still giving almost 14v across the battery when running so the charging side of things appears healthy. I agree that the problem is likely to reappear but so far I have failed totally to get fuse 9 (as per the schematic) to pop again.
Typical - the one time you actually want the thing to conk out and it just keeps on running! I'm going to take it out shortly and run it round a local 2 mile route for about half an hour. If it stops it won't be too far to drag it home.
In case it does fail I've printed out your posts on this matter and left them in the glove box so I can go over everything again. As for the circuit diagram that would be very kind of you. My email address is silversixx@hotmail.com
Thank you so much Huib for all your help.

Re: electrical gremlin?
Let's hope the car does all right.
Nearly 14V when running may not be enough if it is at this value at say 2000 rpm.

Hi Huib and Andy,
I've read your troubleshooting exchanges with much interest! I should have bought some shares in a fuse making factory!
Keep up the good work and get Andy's electrics sorted before winter sets in!

the only thing missing off Huib is a red cape!
Hi Huib,
Last night I went out in the car with it's owner and we did about 300km this time - no problems whatsoever. In fact, we wondered if it would make it over to Breda!
It's obvious now that we've had a good run that the carbs need balancing because it makes an awful lot of noise relative to how fast it's actually going. Luckily there is a good man locally for carbs so i'll get it booked in.
The voltage does appear to be slightly down from what you would hope to see (measuring across the battery) but only by about 5-10 volts so I'll keep a close eye on it to make sure it doesn't deteriorate.
Thank you so much Huib. It is a great privilege for the forum that you freely impart your knowledge. How I wish I could afford a Fulvia....

Re: the only thing missing off Huib is a red cape!
Quite a pleasure. I am involved with Lancia's for 40 years and with the internet for over 10 years and am still occasionally amazed myself how it works. Ten years ago seems like the dark ages now that we are used to the internet.
And compliments to you! You quickly found the right way to tackle the problem and it was a pleasure "working" with you. A sort of ping pong game but with winners only. It takes two to play
Are you sure it is 5 to 10 volts too low?!?!?!

LOL good question....
I think I may have missed out a decimal point.....!

Re: electrical gremlin?
Was this problem solved?
I had similar problem with my first Fulvia, an S2.
The problem was the wiring to the heater fan switch.
Later I found that this is a common problem on S2 and S3 cars

Re: electrical gremlin?
Well, it appears to be solved. Whether Andy and I did it is another matter. I also have the feeling that we don't know for sure what was the cause. This does sometimes happen in life. It does help in learning to accept facts of life. People who are good at that often get very far.
It could not have been the switch for the heater fan nor the switch for the alarm lights (if it has that) as those would not go through the same fuse.

Re: electrical gremlin?
Thanks Paul,
Yes the problem was solved in as much as the electrics have all been working fine for about 300 miles now. However I'm not sure as to how the problem became fixed exactly...!
With Huibs help I tracked the problem down to the lowest connection at the back of fuse number 1 (extreme left) to which is joined a red wire and a thicker brown wire. An initial inspection of the likely sources revealed nothing that was obviously wrong. The spade connector holding the brown and red wires to fuse 1 appeared to be cracked so I replaced it.
Clearly it's highly unlikely that the condition of the spade connector was causing 16 amp fuses to go off on contact like firecrackers - but since I replaced the spade there have been no problems. An 8 amp fuse is in there now and I cannot get the problem to resurface so I'll keep plodding on and keep a keen eye on the fuses.
Interestingly I tried the fan last night. It blew cold air fine but wouldn't serve up any heat. The cooling system appears to be working fine so this isn't for lack of coolant. Perhaps there could be something in this? Huib has very generously emailed me a wiring diagram for the Zagato so I'll have a closer look.
Kind regards
Andy
