Hi Huib, Hi Paul,
Ahhh, I see what you mean!
The inner nuts both look shiny and new and the 'staking' Paul mentioned can be seen clearly now that I know which bit I'm meant to be looking at! I'll undo the nut and see if the hub can be removed without needing a puller. I might be lucky....
cheers
Andy

"I might be lucky...."
Indeed you MIGHT, but don't hold your breath!
Good luck,
Paul

Oh - I forgot to ask where I can get the tool from to undo the inner nut!
Do I have an option that doesn't include a certain British based Lancia parts supplier?

One thing that might help: slacken off the handbrake shoe adjustors before attempting to remove the hub assembly.
When the drums are a bit worn, which after 30 years is quite likely, the handbrake shoes can catch on the unworn portion. With a puller, it is quite possible comprehensively to destroy the whole handbrake mechanism this way!

Are you a member of the Lancia Motor Club? (If not why not?)
The LMC does have a tool loan scheme.
I have the tools, but I am in France - near Geneva...

Hi Paul,
Good tip. I'll be very careful removing the drum since the shoes are not correctly retracted in the absence of the 'pull' spring which fell out...

Hi Paul,
No I'm not a member. The principle reason being that I don't own a Lancia! The car belongs to a good friend who has asked me to go over it for him. I'll suggest that he joins up.
If it's any consolation, I would own one if I could afford one! My father had an HF Fulvia when I was four (1978) and since then Italian cars (and American cars - sorry!!) have been my favourites. I run a 156 v6 right now and a Fulvia would complement it beautifully on the weekends!
If only....

A 156V6?
Dear God!
We worked on one of those at Evolution Engineering. Lovely car to drive but get rid of it before you have starter motor trouble (12 hours work - horrible!).
Fulvia starter motor? About 20 minutes

Starter? That was a doddle - because having snapped it's belt and bent 20 valves the motor was sat on the bench when I replaced it ! ! ! ! !
Despite the abundance of non-Alfa engineering on the car and despite the awkwardness of the packaging it is (for me, at least) a small price to pay for by far the most intoxicating powerplant in a 'daily' car that I've come across to date. Whilst most modern motors make me want to inject drain-cleaner into my eyeballs, this one crackles and fizzes and just generally makes me tingle....
But don't worry - just as soon as I have the means, Lancia will be very well represented in my collection!!

Hello.
I couldn't agree more: that engine is a dream and as I said, the chassis is magnificent, although the suspension was just a little soft for my taste - but great turn-in!
On the job I mentioned, we also did the cam belts etc. I thought that the owner was going to fall on his sword when he received the bill!
