overheating problem
Re: overheating problem
Thank you for the advice. I understood that the radiator had a new matrix when I purchased it and I had it independently tested before I installed it. I didn't follow your procedure when I originally filled it, I just put coolant in it and ran it for 10 minutes with the cap off and topped it up. So I will empty it and follow your procedure and see how it goes. I will also check the impeller in the water pump too ( I haven't done this before, so hopefully it will prove straight forward). Thanks again.
Re: overheating problem
If it has run at least once without overheating after filling up it means the air has gone out of the system. There is no need to empty it and fill it again.
Note that there is always a bit of coolant “on the shelf" by which I mean the horizontal top of the matrix. If you check superficially it may look it is full of coolant while the level is actually too low.
I forgot to mention the most recent problem of occasional overheating. In fact this was on Claire’s car. I traced it down to a very small crack in the radiator matrix near the bottom. As long as the temp stayed below 90 degree C it did not leak. When the temp went over 90 degrees C, the crack opened and coolant was lost. This usually happened when waiting for a traffic light as the electric fan turns on at 94 degrees. This crack was very near the end of the overflow hose so it looked like coolant was lost through the overflow.

Re: overheating problem
what did Claire do when this happened ? did it occur 1 x or many times ?
I visualize "panic-scenes (like slapstick comedy) of Clair whispering vile curses " Oh Drat; Not Again!!"
while exiting while ripping-off seatbelt while tripping over said seatbelt when exiting car while light changes to green while fumbling - in the dark, of course - with rain pouring down (good to cool the engine while moving) for the 25kg "jerry can" of water - while popping the hood & smiling at the drivers behind ... with Dracula lurking in the shadows !
Sorry, I got a bit carried away.
No, seriously - how was forward progress maintained in such dire circumstances ?

Re: overheating problem
I had this problem with a 122 Volvo. A fine crack in the bottom header and one was hard pressed to see the steam/vapour because of the turbulence from the fan.
Cheers, Brian.
