I know there are improvements to be made by replacing the mechanical fan of the series 1,
but I don't think I could live without the wonderful work of art that is the series 1 mechanical fan & support!

Hi there Joe,

Yes we have talked before unfortunately I don't think we are related, anyway, I think I may have emailed you before.

Just to let you know - I am from London I was born near London and live there now though I am originally from the town that Lewis Hamilton is from. My mother is from Salerno where we have a house. I visit here regularly as the low cost flight industry really helps me out.

Thanks for the offer of parts as well, right now though, since I am in Italy I would hope that it would be quite easy - or at least easier, to source parts from here. I've been told by my cousin - who loves classic cars as well that there is an old guy near where I am with a ricambi for old parts.

Right now it looks like I'm looking for a oil seal and a bearing so I hope it won't be too difficult to source. Its Sunday now so tomorrow to find out.

Hope to hear from you soon again

Hi there Bert

Could you tell me how to do that - perhaps you could give me cross reference details from the spare parts catalogue - the one that this forum supplies?

Kind regards

Ok so just to keep everyone posted I have removed the pump.

This is my experience so far.

First I removed the top hose from the raditaor to make access easier.

Taking the grill might have been an option were it not for the oil cooler that prevented access to the most important bottom screw on the grill on the side the pump is located. Taking the grill off would have made the job a bit easier but removal of the pump can be done without it. I'm not quite sure about putting the pump back on though.

Most of the bolts that attach the pump were easy to access and remove except for the two bolts at the bottom of the pump however which were much more difficult to remove and it is necessary to undo the hose at the bottom of the pump that leads from the radiator to the pump itself. The clip for this hose was quite difficult as access andimpossible to see withthe grill in place. It was best removed with a hoseclip tool rather than a screw driver. There is not much space down there to turn the spanner (size 10mm as Jay said) and had to be done in tiny increments at first.

When I inspected the inside on the pump, I found on the shaft side, in the crevice, at the bottom was a collection of an oil and water mix although all the water that had come out of the pump when removing the pump was water with hardly any oil. The car had been filled with new water and oil just before it had been put in the garage it was in.

I'm not sure whether I have an old style water pump as I believe I have to look at the turbine/impellier which is situated inside the pump. The shaft is made of steel of some sort and has a flat edge between the sets of teeth that run along the shaft. The front of the pump does have a small design on it which may mean something although right now I'm not sure what it is, some sort of chain circle???

The bearing is very well worn and will be replaced with a SKF bearing if I can find one.

I don't know about the seal as I have not taken the pump apart yet but i will do this tomorrow, hopefully.

I also intends to take the radiator out and see if I can find someone here who can recondition it.

I'd also like to remove the heater element so please could someone give advice how to do it. i haven't look myself but some tips would be nice.

Thanks again fro everyone who is helping me. I will keep the forum posted as to what happens with this.
