I remember the Golden Rule for racing tyres was rims 1 inch wider than the tyres, to aid sidewall stability !!
I suppose the same can be said for road based tyres as well.

Peter I forgot to answer the Wber question. I use 36 venturis on the hills and for the rally 34s as they give a cleaner pick up in the 2000 - 3000 rpm range that is critical in the autotests. Mu cams start to really pull at 3000, and produce peak power at 7000, so I rev the engine to 7200.

Yes I used the A032Rs on the Alfa last year and the less tread depth you get on them the better they are, as the soft rubber blocks do move about abit when they are new. Tyre pressures were critical, and I ended up at 33 psi on a 195 tye for a 900 kg car, which gave good stability and turn in while not effecting the grip or traction

These prices seem very high.

At Evo, I could buy Yoko A042s at about £80 each, but I found that Yoko's AVS Sport tyres were nearly as good in the dry and better in the wet - and I got those very cheaply indeed in the trade. As for wheels, Minilite made my 7 x 15 and 6 x 15 (rear) wheels for me for £100 each. They are aluminium sadly; Minilite does magnesium too but these would be £350 each.

Can you clarify the tyre, we can get A032R or A048R in UK, but don't have a 42 listed

If you are using a 48R, they are bad in the wet, but the 32R is considered not too bad, with the "ordinary" A539 is as good in the wet, though loses out when things start to dry out.

It's Ireland so we get a lot of practice in the rain here :)

Mind you Paul! The 350gbp per tyre is close to the 2000eur per set. These would be campy remakes. I see 13x8BWA's go for a 1000eur per 4. I use 13x8 ATS for 200eur per set and had them modified for I believe 300. You need piles of wheels at the end.

Agree with that 1inch rule. But since most of us use 6in rims, what would be the maximum size of street tyre to comply?

As for the O32's I am very scared to use them in the wet. I use the A539's for street use and the wet. Very impressed by this 50eur tyre as well! I live in the Netherlands and the O32's are difficult to get. To buy them in Germany you have to SHOW your competition license before you can get them. So I get them from England. But here and in Germany they are known as very tricky in the wet. There were some race series using this tyre two years ago. One of them had a fatal accident because of using it in the wet. The O32's were abandoned in these series after that incident.

Apologies! Sackcloth and ashes! I meant A048Rs of course - and I used to use A032s - I must have been confusing them!

I found the 48s pretty much OK in "slight wet" - as I did the 32s. When it is really raining as it does both in England and Ireland (as well as France) then neither is much good in my view - especially since my surname is not Schumacher!

No £350 per WHEEL - in magnesium. These are Minilites, not some camp modern thing - and my own view is that they suit a Fulvia, being very much of the period - and much better than the "Wolfies" I once saw on an unfortunate Fulvia!

Yes Paul but you have trick dampers that allow the most idiotic antics in any condition !!!
Standard, or even expensive off the shelf dampers will certainly be less forgiving of the wet surface behaviour of these tyres.
