If there is any ethanol component in the fuel being sold in the EU now, the original membranes will gradually dissolve.

Quick follow-up:

Definitely the fuel is leaking out of the bottom of the carbs. I positioned a paper towel under one of the carbs and left it overnight. There was a nice smelly stain in the morning, right under the accelerator pump!

I checked Carlo Stella's thread, very interesting. Also a lot more good stuff on the Italian forum. Pity my Italian is approximately at the level of a 2-year-old child ... or worse!

I'll be taking the carbs off over next weekend and expect to have to replace most of the degradable parts.
