I think we might be getting somewhere now.

I jacked the front wheels off the ground to spin the wheels and listen for any tell tale sounds. Nothing obvious at either wheel.

When I started the car with wheels in the air and put the car in gear to spin the drive shafts it was clearly audible from within the car and the pulsing could be felt through the floor pan / bulkhead. No discernible noise at the wheels and nothing clearly audible when listening from above the engine.

With the clutch in there is no noise so my thinking is that the bearing for the half shaft must be the source of the noise. Given that this bearing is mounted close to an engine mount and could then transfer noise through the bulkhead. I'll need to test with just one wheel jacked up at a time to determine if its a halfshaft bearing or the diff.

Over 170K miles now so entering that zone where all sorts of weird wear & tear might start to appear.
