If the valve timing is incorrect can the valves hit the pistons? i am currently having problems with my 1300 series 1. Any help would be appreciated

Yes they can!
Use the markings on the front cam carrier and the cam shaft to get an aproximate setup to avoid hitting the pistons. If you have hit pistons then you could have bent a/some valves.
The manual has the procedure depending on your fulvia model to set the timing accurately.

As Tim says, they can. And they will! Again as Tim says, lining up the marks is just good enough to avoid interference statically.
Use the method as described in the Technical Databook page Fulv.01/0400. 1 mm if you have a 302 engine. 2.2 mm if you have a 303 engine. Using the vernier in combination with the sprockets you can time them to well within half a degree.
