1969 1.3S

Unread post by walt spak »

I bought a very nice 1969 1.3S Coupe (818.360) in 2006. The seller pointed out a noise in the engine that was not cured with a new timing chain. I listened, not that I hear all that well, but wasn't worried. The carburators were out of synce. and I figured that was cause the strange noise. Shortly afterward I found that the noise was really a rod bearing. The car left me stranded 600 miles (360 Km) from home. I rented a truck & trailer and brought it home.

I finally made it through enough projects that I found the time to take it apart. I needed a 1/2" drive breaker bar with a length of pipe to extend the handle to get the rod bolts loosened. They must of had a 120 Ft. Lb (16.5 MKG)of torque on them.

I cut the crank & installed undersize bearings, bored the cylinders & installed new pistons, replaced the valves & guides w/ seals and replaced all the other parts that need it. Six weeks later, I finally got to take a test run and I am very please that it runs perfectly.

I can barly wait for the ALC East Coast Reunion so I can get it out in the mountains.
