Fulvia First Impressions

Unread post by Eric8235 »

I have been shopping for a Fulvia and finally got to drive a 1975 Series 3. Since this was my first, I wasn't sure what to expect. 3 things concerned me:

1. The steering was quite heavy, although there was no play. I realize there is no power assist, but it still seemed heavy for a car this size.
2. Revs needed to be kept high. At lower revs the car started to "buck".
3. The brakes required quite a bit of pedal force which surprised me since this year was supposed to have power assist.

Is the above normal, or was I driving a car that clearly needed work, despite being advertised as being in perfect running condition?

Thanks. Apologies if these are naive questions.

Steering should be relatively light for an old fashioned non power steering car. If it is heavy, it probably has wrong tyres and or wrong rims. Rims should be 4,5J14 with ET of 51mm which means the original steel wheels or the FPS alloy wheels. Tyres Michelin 165HR14 XAS. Apart from that it could also be wrong caster or an issue with track rod ends, suspension ball joints, steering idler box.

Bucking could be caused by wrong carburetor setting or throttle cable too short. Car should be able to run at 50km/hr (31 miles/hr) in top gear without bucking.

Should be relatively easy to brake the car.

I am in love with the Fulvia and Fulvia Sport Zagato and do not intend to use this car as a daily driver. So I'm willing to put up with the inconveniences for the sake of "art".

For the heavy steering, remember to rotate the steering wheel only when the car is moving,
just slowing moving, elsewhere without assistance You must overcome the tire friction.

a fulvia drives considerably modern and light for a 60's design. In regards to handling, steering and gear shifting, they were ahead to contemporary other car brands.
