Hi,
I have recently had my S1 Rallye S gearbox worked on to fix an oil leak on the top selector bush. When the workshop opened it they discovered damage on first and second gear, the synchros and 1-2 synchro hub. It was a bit strange as the car has quite low documented mileage and only one owner before me. It did not display any signs of damage before and shifted quite well. I bought all the parts new at great expense from Italy and it was all put back together by a reputable gearbox workshop, with copies of the workshop manual provided by me "just in case". I filled it, after a lot of research on oils suitable on bronze synchros, with Redline MT-90 (75W90 GL-4) synthetic manual transmission oil. On various forums this oil was praised for the improvement in shift quality it brings and compatibility with bronze.
All shifts are absolutely perfect, even when cold. First to second is smooth and quick compared to the various Fulvias I've owned. The only problem is shifting down from third to second. At any speed over +-25 mph it crunches badly, which really hampers swift driving.
I have done around 1,000 miles since refitting and iI'l take it back to the workshop to inspect. Any ideas what might be wrong to point them in he right direction?
Thanks
Albert

THE SELLER OF "VERY INTERESTING1.3 (sort of) "HF" FULVIA" - MENTIONED IN MY POST OF 28/04/14 - A FINE GENT WHO FROM THE DUESSELDORF REGION - CURRENTLY HAS HIS "HF" IN A (well iknown/respected) LANCIA SHOP IN TROISDORF NEAR BONN - FOR CORRECTION OF A NIGGLING TRANSMISSION "SITUATION". THÍS SHOP HAS SERVICED THE FULVIA FOR YEARS & HAS (recently?) DONE SOME TRANS TASKS; ALONG WITH OTHER "WORK".
ACCORDING TO SELLER - HIS CARS TRANS PROBLEM MAY BE SIMILAR TO THE PROBLEM YOUR CARS TRANS IS SUFFERING.

Re: S1 gearbox question - slow downshift to 2nd
you can try something that often works good.
start the engine and try to shift in second geat without the clutch.
only try to shift in second gear with engine is running.
first you try to pull it in second gear(it won't go into gear) let it loose and try again.
everytime for about a few seconds
at some point you will see, when you pull the gearknob, the car wants to move.
at this point, you stop doing this and go for a ride and try to shift again.
its a solution for worn synchrorings, but it possible work for your problem.
let me know.

Re: S1 gearbox question - slow downshift to 2nd
Hi Bert, thanks for the tip. I tried this but did not notice any improvement.
I am starting to wonder if there is anything that is not aligning properly in the gearbox. Is there anything that can be adjusted that may have an impact? Second gear, synchro and synchro hub are all new...

Re: S1 gearbox question - slow downshift to 2nd
Shifting down to 2nd is difficult in almost any gearbox I know. When I rebuild a Fulvia gearbox I give it a special treatment which improves things a bit but it never becomes the easiest shifting gear.
The other day I sat next to Sandro Munari at lunch. He told me one of his secrets was how to shifts gears on a Fulvia faster than lightning. I try to lead a life without being in a hurry so I did not take any lessons. My Fulvia coupe has done half a million kilometres. I plan to go for the full one million.
However, if you are interested in taking lessons, I can always ask.

Re: S1 gearbox question - slow downshift to 2nd
I know Fulvia second gear synchros are often slow. This feels different however. First to second feels very good, better in fact than any other Fulvia I've ever driven. Change down from third to second however causes crunching without using any force at relatively slow speeds. I am certain it can't be "normal".

Shifting down from 4 to 2. How is that?
