Seal rings in oil system

Unread post by LanciaFin »

Hello all, I've begun the long and slow way to resurrect my -63 Flaminia Berlina 2.8. First things first, so changing the fluids is the first task. Are the rubber ring seals in oil filter (both the uppermost seal in top of filter cup, and the one inside the bottom of filter cup) and oil pump suction filter available as some kind of standard, not Lancia-specific parts? By the way, how do you know if your Lancia has spent much of its life in Sweden? https://drive.google.com/file/d/19A8aKp ... sp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/18zHVbU ... sp=sharing :D Regards, Miika

This is what was in when I opened the oil filter: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1weeS0E ... sp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nxzuIS ... sp=sharing I think that seal is not related to original in any way, but is some kind of substitute from hydraulic parts or something like that. It may leave the filter element a bit too loose, so I'd like to see how the original (or intended) seal looks like. So far I've not found any picture to get any idea, if the original seal is just an o-ring with square profile, or something like that? Regards, -Miika

After having got some replies from Alfa-people I came into conclusion, that the original seal is a square profile o-ring. One was not immediately available, so I cut one from nitrile rubber. Seems to work, and the filter element gets nicely pressed in place. My Flaminia will only be run quite briefly in next year(s) because of other renovation, and the filter will be replaced before more serious use. The old engine oils were heavily contaminated with unburnt gasoline (only brief running every now and then during last 25-30 years, and the carburettor was reported to have flooded at some point), which apparently had soaked much sludge from the engine (possibly unopened since factory!), which will get into present filter. At that time I'll be using a correct seal ring. For oil pump suction filter I simply used an o-ring of nitrile rubber. Braking system removed and disassembled with usual results. :)-D Next job is to change heater hoses (leaked new liquids out) and remove the extremely badly slipping clutch for repairs. I'm in love with this car already. BR, Miika

Any Flaminia is a very rewarding project. Working on it is a pleasure and once it is on the road, driving and maintaining are a lot of fun. Good luck with the project! Hubert

The upper seal ring i a V-shaped thing that is I believe specific to Lancia. About 20 years ago the were almost unobtainable and very expensive. These days they are easily available but still quite expensive. The problem is that if you fit them incorrectly to the can you will very likely destroy it once you tighten the can. (And it is of course very difficult to see when you thighten the can, if the gasket has slipped out of position)
