anti roll bar problem

Unread post by Stuart Wilson »

I have a Lybra SW 2.4JTd. When I drive over bumps, it makes a rattling noise. Over smooth roads, there is no rattling. The specialist I've been to cannot recreate the problem, except when driving the car.

I've had the outer anti roll bar bushes replaced, but it made no difference. My specialist suspects that the car needs a new anti roll bar. Is this a common fault on the Lybra?

As the car is one of only two in the UK, no-one I speak to knows of what problems the car commonly suffers.

Dear Stuart,

look at the next page of entiries where there is discussion on suspension noises; I also 'suffer' them on my 2.0 but only in cold weather...it seems to be the material used rather than a 'fault' which is the cause. It's in the front suspension...and your specialist may have correctly guessed the remedy.

Early on in my car's life I had asked the garage to check and they told me everything was according to spec...I've noe decided to just live with it as I only hear the noise over bumps at low speeds in winter...

I think maybe I have the same problem. In the winter, I hear a kind of "klank" noise, over sharp bumps, typically, ice bumps. As we have a pretty long winter up here in Norway, the problem is very irritating, and something that I would very much like to fix. The sound seems to come from the front suspensions. Any ideas what it could be?

Haarvard,

The rattle on my car is exectly as you describe in your car. I can sometimes feel the rattle through the floor of the car. I would agree that it is irritating.

It seems that the anti roll bar rattle is common on the Lybra. I believe that Lancia knows about this problem and have produced a new roll bar made from better materials.

I am planning to have a new roll bar fitted to my car to see if it cures the problem. I will let you know if it is cured by fitting a new roll bar.

Stuart.

egr. STUART,
la barra stabilizzatrice nuova non aiuta granche',
bisogna fissare dei supporti sopra la barra stessa ma temo che i meccanici da voi non siano in grado di farlo.Servirebbe un intervento in italia ,magari a BRESCIA

Can someone translate the message of Alfredo-BLULANCIA-VR

The traslation of the above Italian message is the following (with the robotic translation from Italian to English)
"STUART, the new stabilizzatrice bar does not help granche', must fix of the supports over the same bar but I fear that the mechanics from you in a position to are not farlo.Servirebbe an participation in Italy, even to BRESCIA"

My friend the problem of posterior anti-roll bar is very kwowing! You must know the followings:
The anti-roll bars of Lybra (posterior and anterior) has made by TRW.
The anti-roll bar has divided in three parts: The main anti-roll bar and the two anti-roll bar rod (support the main anti-roll bar with the absorbers).

The main anti-roll bar supporting on cross-member at two "mountings". Each "mounting" has a bush that pressing at the botoom with a metal support of 3mm. This metal support is very weak and failed every 30000-40000 Km. Then the bush loosing the press on anti-roll bar and all the bar noises!

An Italian friend says that the only solution is " to put a metal plate of 3mm into every anti-roll bar bush...(between bush and support, under of bush) and put some welding on metal support and anchor"

Therefore, you maybe know, that the two posterior anti-roll bar rods (support the main anti-roll bar with the absorbers) in model of 1999-2001 was from plastic and now are from metal. These cause noises special in cold weather. These are made from TRW and now are the same with these from FIAT Marea (about 20-25 Euros/each)

I hope so to help you

Yes, looks like the same problem than Fiat Marea have. Maybe the same part ? About 20-25cm bar upright beside shock absorber ? Very cheap part and very easy to change by itself in Marea.
