checking a monte carlo - where is VIN stamp?

Hi everyone,

I am looking to purchase a 1977 monte carlo, both the seller and I were unable to locate the VIN stamp on the chassis. There is a plate that has the VIN on it riveted to the body, is this the only identification on the vehicle?
