Rear leaf spring shackle pin bush

Unread post by phill »

Hi - Obviously it would be more awkward but is it possible to remove/replace a rear leaf spring shackle pin bush without removing the spring first (rear end of spring). Any tips for this most welcome and if not possible then tips for spring removal.
Many thanks,
Phil

One of the tools for the rear spring was a kind of "spanner" that allowed to keep the spring "stretched" while removing one end or the entire spring. Have made a pair for myself. Is not that hard to make, but it is still some work. See one picture for the orriginal, afraid is not so very clear. Other picture shows the "home-made" version.
You could make a simple temp one by just making a steel plate of the correct length, and use that as a "stretcher" and then release the load on the spring by jacking up the rear till the spring is being "spanned" on its ends by that steel plate. Be very careful, if the spring unloads suddenly, that can result in injury.

Maybe a simple flat steel plate risks to buckle and bend under the load. An angle piece or steel tube (like in the home made version) would be better

Fulvia silentbloc tool rear rear.jpg
And hear the tools (same tool, one is missing the thread and smaller bush / socket / washer) to extract the silent bloc from the spring. The inside diameter of the bush is just a tiny bit larger than the outer diameter of the silent bloc. Then use a length of thread and a strong ring or socket with outer diameter just a fraction of a mm smaller than the outer diameter of the silent bloc to pull the silent bloc out. Same tool but with a lightly larger strong washer (or stack of washers) to pull the new one in.

This way you can replace the silent bloc under the car without taking the spring off the car.

Note that it is important to torque the bottom shackle bolt with the spring in the correct position as shown in the DT.

With original Lancia shackle blocs (the rubber at the top of the shackle) you can play with the position of the shackle when torquing the top shackle bolt to set the caster. You cannot with any of the imitation shackle blocs. They are not strong enough. Somebody copied them without looking at the steel construction inside.

I you decide to make the extraction tool and want to have it last long, best use trapezium thread.
