Removing upper gearbox mount
Removing upper gearbox mount
Does the upper gearbox mount have a supporting function or is it just a damper to reduce vibrations and keep the engine and gearbox straight?
I think mine is parished and I want to remove it to inspect it. Do I need to support the gearbox in order to safely remove it?

Re: Removing upper gearbox mount
On a new car the upper mount keeps the engine / gearbox upright.
On a car which is over 40 years old it is wise to first check the engine rubbers and the rubbers and bracket at the rear of the gearbox.
If all okay you can safely remove the top one.
If you replace it, it would be logical to also replace the rubbers under engine and gearbox.

Re: Removing upper gearbox mount
Ok, clear. It would be sensible to replace it all then. Thanks!
Re: Removing upper gearbox mount
And carefully check the steel M10 bush through the rubbers at the rear of the gearbox. If that one has been shortened I bet 10 to 1 that the subframe mounting boxes in the sills are bad. Or the subframe itself.

Re: Removing upper gearbox mount
Could you please explain what 'shortened' means?
Distorted by pressure/wear or modified by some 'expert' mechanic?
Do you have the correct dimensions available?
Thanks a lot, new rubber parts for the gearbox have arrived and will soon be installed...

Re: Removing upper gearbox mount
See the picture. This M10 bush should be 75 long.
If the subframe outriggers are bad or the subframe mounting boxes in the sills, the body sits too low on the subframe. The gear shift mechanism touches the tunnel. Some shorten this bush and cut part from the rubber supporting the rear of the gearbox.

Perfect, thank you. So it's the 'expert mechanic' problem.
I'm going to watch out when replacing the gear support rubbers.
Today we had 150km smooth ride - i love that car!

Re: Removing upper gearbox mount
I'm lucky - 75mm length, however quite corroded.
Anyway it was not possible to remove the upper gearbox rubbers - not enough space available without damaging other parts.
Any hints how to do it with amateur equipment only?

I have the bushes in stainless steel. If you want one, give me your address.
Can you post a picture of the rubbers you cannot remove?

Re: Removing upper gearbox mount
Thanks for the offer, i keep it in mind but for the time being i am happy with the old part, i cleaned it and put a thin coating of fluidfilm on.
The mentioned rubber is the upper one at the aft gearbox support, being assembled with mentioned bushing.
I only have a movable car jack and some suopport stands available.
Guess i have to see a workshop with a hoist...
