Re: Inspecting bearings without removing engine
Thank you both. Huib, for the 1.2mm test with the head on the block - it would make sense that this is the thickness of the gasket if everything else so correct. If it is less I will need to get a thicker head gasket, as the rest of the engine is completely assembled now.

Re: Inspecting bearings without removing engine
Hi everyone, I am in the home stretch with the engine rebuild. The engine builder phoned me today with a question though before he can finish the reassembly: The block (Series 1 1.3S) was bored to 77.8mm (0.8mm oversize) but the Spesso head gasket I have is very close to the bore size. Even though t...

Re: S1 Gearbox 4 speed problem - Third gear jump
I'm about to open my gearbox to replace the oil seals, but also because it drops out of 3d too easily when I depress the clutch. Great tips in this thread regarding the 3-4 slider that may be installed incorrectly. The other issue I want to check is 3d to 2nd down shift that crunches, even when not ...

Re: S1 Gearbox 4 speed problem - Third gear jump
When buying synchros they don't appear to list different parts for different gears:

S1 gearbox input and output shaft leaks
While having the subframe separated from my car for engine work I am also carrying out various other jobs while access is easy. I have noticed my gearbox input shaft is leaking a bit into the belhousing and the side shafts are also leaking. I have bought a gearbox gasket kit including oil seals to t...

Re: Valves and guides with/ without valve stem seals
I managed to find an S2 manual. Valve/ guide tolerances are the same as S1. I wonder why the valve stem seals were fitted on S2 and not on S1?

Re: Valves and guides with/ without valve stem seals
Sorry, the seals are at the engine builder so will check next time I am there. The attached valve guide to stem tolerances are from the S1 workshop manual (A and B). I would appreciate if someone with an S2 manual can perhaps check for me what these val...

Re: Valves and guides with/ without valve stem seals
Thanks Huib, I will install the seals with the new guides. There is a set in the engine gasket set I bought (black), but I might discard those and hunt for Viton seals as it is impossible to know what quality those in the gasket set would be...

Valves and guides with/ without valve stem seals
Hi, I did a search on this topic but could not find anything on the forum. I am in the process of having my S1 Rallye 1.3S engine reconditioned. The engine reconditioner noted that I need new valve guides, but that my valves are good. My car currently does not have valve stem seals. I have order all...
