See the attached PDF file. The "special wrench" mentioned is an ordinary 5 mm socket, although you may need a universal joint (a swivel adapter). It's recommended to use a six-corner socket. I got a cheap 12-corner one stuck at the locking rod. Not that bad actually: the socket stays there...

Do you hear a rattling noise when this happens? The valve that controls mixing of warm and fresh air is known to fail sometimes. It can be reached by taking apart the carpet against the centre console.
